Augmented reality in public spaces. Basic techniques for video mapping

[two_third last=”no”][title size=”3″]Abstract[/title]

This book, the first in a series, dedicated to New Technologies for the Arts, is aimed at all digital arts students (PC and MAC users) who want to try video mapping for the first time. Thanks to a course of reading that alternates theoretic concepts and practical exercises – explaining from how to take a photograph to how to request permission, from the layer masks to 2D and 3D animation, up to the final projection and warping – the reader will be able to project a video mapping event.

Topics discussed: The history of video mapping; The choice of video projector; Layer masks in Illustrator®; After Effects® and video mapping; Cinema 4D®, 3D scenes, Camera Calibration …; Audio-video editing; Resolume Areana®, real time content and warping; The architectural survey; Mapping methods; Video mapping and bureaucracy

Donato Maniello

An architect with a research doctorate in “Materials and Structures for Architecture”, he focuses his research on the field of photography, investigating the relationships that exist between architecture and art (www.donatomaniello.com). In 2010 he founded the gloWArp studio (www.glowarp.com), a multimedia communication studio specialising in New Technologies for the Arts (NTA) and their diffusion, of which he is Art Director. In the same year he started doing video mapping performances in Italy and abroad. Currently the studio’s research is focused on the use of NTA for the enhancement of culture and the running of the GLOWfestival (www.glowfestival.it), an event entirely dedicated to indoor augmented reality and light as a creative medium. Since 2012 he has been involved in training activities for private companies and seminars for Italian academic institutions and universities, as well as being a teacher for the academic course of “Digital Application for the Visual Arts” and freelance teacher for workshops relating to NTA.
